Ethanol extract of Taraxacum mongolieum Hand-Mass (TMEE) was investigated for the effect on the phase I enzyme and carcinogen-DNA adduct formation. At 2.5, 12.5, and 25 mg/ml of TMEE, the binding of [3H]B[a]P metabolites to DNA of NCTC-clone 1469 cells was inhibited by 38.0%, 77.8%, and 68.5%, respectively. There was slight inhibition in the activity of cytochrome P450 1A1 enzyme with the treatment of TMEE. These results suggest that TMEE has chemopreventive potential by inhibiting cytochrome P450 1A1 activity and benzo[a]pyrene-DNA adduct formation.
