Abstract

Objective: A New cervicography system was examined for its value to augment the sen-sitivity and specificity for screening of cervical cancer and premalignant lesions.
Study design: In a cohort 452 women with a mean age 45.2 years(22~77) who underwent routine cytologic screening, cervicography and testing for high-risk human papilloma virus by the hybrid capture assay were studied for their ability to detect cervical cancer and CIN II/III. Cervical punch biopsy specimens were taken in 29.4% (133/452) patients because they had an atypical or positive cervicogram or abnormal cytologic results in the primary screening smears. The data were analyzed by two-tailed f and fishers exact test.
Results: Twenti eight patients were diagnosed with cervical cancer and 38 CIN II/III by histologic study. Cytologic study identified 83.1%, Cervicography 96%, HPV-DNA test 46%.Sensitivity and specificity of the cervicography were 92.6% ~ 100% and 81.6% ~56.f% respectively. Results of the different techniques should be interpreted in relationship to each other and not as absolute values because collection of specimens for cytologic study was done mostly with cotton swab, which may be suboptimal for screening but is general practice in korea.
Conclusion: Screening for cervical cancer and CIN can significantly be improved by""New Cervicography"" with cytologic examination and HPV-DNA testing with the hybrid capture assay.
