Fig. 1. Molecular oxygen as versatile electron acceptors, and its association with ferroptosis. Superoxide and hydrogen peroxide are generated through various enzymatic reactions whereas hydroxyl radicals are produced via chemical reactions. Enzymatic bypass reactions indicate direct decomposition of hydrogen peroxide to water by a variety of enzymes, such as catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Hydroxyl radicals are closely associated with ferroptosis, which is counteracted by sulfhydryls (-SH).
